1. The five-step ladder: Chinese → AI tools → domain → regulations → network

There is no fixed order to enter the industry, but there is an order to learning. Language is your entry ticket, AI is your lever, domain knowledge is your living, regulations are your shield, and your network is the amplifier. Each step lists what to learn, what to use, and a self-check — do not move on before you can pass it.

1

Chinese & jargon (for foreigners) · foreign languages & jargon (for Chinese newcomers)

Time 1–2 months to build the base, then keep adding 20 terms a week
  • ▸Pharma trade jargon: enquiry, quotation, PI, contract, production, QC, shipping, clearance, collection — the ten-step deal chain
  • ▸Product & quality words: CAS numbers, pharmacopoeias (CP/USP/EP/JP), CoA, batch number, expiry, impurities, residual solvents
  • ▸Build your own Chinese–English–Spanish glossary (20 terms a week; 500+ in a year — that is a portfolio piece)
  • ▸For foreigners: pass HSK 3–4 everyday vocabulary first, then industry terms. For Chinese newcomers: English is the working language; Spanish, French or Russian is your edge
Self-check — pass when:

✓ Given an English enquiry, you can explain in Chinese what the customer wants

✓ Seeing a CAS number and a pharmacopoeia abbreviation, you know what they are and where to check them

✓ Your glossary holds 50+ tri-lingual entries you wrote yourself

2

AI tools: make AI your teammate

Time 2–4 weeks to get going, then lifelong refinement. Master one first — do not pay for ten at once
  • ▸The foundation trio: ChatGPT (general Q&A/writing, top-tier ES & EN), Claude (long documents, code, complex analysis), Gemini (Google suite integration, generous free tier)
  • ▸The four-step delegation formula: what to do + what you have + what you want + plan first, execute later (confirming a plan is 100× cheaper than rework)
  • ▸Three modes: Plan (plan first, then execute — the safe default for beginners), Craft (get straight to work), Ask (questions only, no changes)
  • ▸Pick output tools by goal: Canva (posters/decks), Gamma (client-ready decks in seconds), Notion AI (knowledge management), Zapier/n8n (automation)
  • ▸The floor for using AI: ask well, verify answers, and know when not to trust it (numbers and compliance documents must be human-checked)
Self-check — pass when:

✓ You can turn a vague request into a 'what to do + what you have + what you want' prompt and make AI plan before acting

✓ On an AI-drafted quotation you can spot at least one number that needs human verification

✓ You have run one full workflow: raw material → AI processing → finished output → your own acceptance check

3

Domain knowledge: products, process and the numbers

Time 2–3 months (1.5 hours a day + one hands-on exercise a week)
  • ▸The four product lines: excipients / intermediates / APIs / formulations — different uses, margins, barriers and payment terms (see the six tracks below)
  • ▸Pharmacopoeias: how CP (China), USP (US), EP (Europe) and JP (Japan) differ and which market each serves
  • ▸The trade chain: Inquiry → Quotation → PI → Contract → Production → QC → Shipping → Clearance → Payment
  • ▸Quotation & costing: cost build-up, FX, freight, margin, tiered pricing; the two lines you never cross and the zero-rebate trap
  • ▸Terms & payment: FOB/CIF/EXW/DDP (Incoterms 2020), T/T, L/C, and the risk comparison of open-account terms
Self-check — pass when:

✓ You can walk one deal from enquiry to cash collection, saying who does what and where each document lives

✓ Given a product, you can classify it, name the applicable pharmacopoeia and suggest a price

✓ You survive six quarters in the simulation without a loss-making deal (your score never zeroes out)

4

Regulations & compliance: the industry's shield

Time 2–3 months to start, plus lifelong updates (regulations are alive)
  • ▸The six compliance documents: DMF, CEP/COS, CoA, TDS, SDS, GMP certificates — the entry ticket of pharma trade; learn to spot fakes at a glance
  • ▸Registration map: NMPA (China), FDA (US), EMA/EDQM (Europe), LatAm (ANMAT Argentina, INVIMA Colombia, COFEPRIS Mexico)
  • ▸EU REACH and the three SVHC lists: registration, notification and communication duties (compulsory for the Europe line)
  • ▸Contract core clauses: quality disputes, arbitration seat, force majeure, IP, liability caps — where legally trained people shine
  • ▸Red lines: bad debt on credit terms, expired certificates, forged documents, GDPR (no cold emails to the EU-27/UK/Switzerland), and what may be said to customers
Self-check — pass when:

✓ Given a CEP copy, you can judge its authenticity, validity and scope

✓ For an EU customer, you can name the three compliance documents you must obtain first

✓ You know the cold-email red line: which countries/regions are strictly off-limits

5

Network & market: let opportunities find you

Time Start in month 3: reach out to two industry people a week, for life
  • ▸Trade fairs are the densest networking there is: CPHI China (Shanghai, around June each year), CPHI Worldwide, API China — go at least once a year
  • ▸LinkedIn prospecting: formulation plants, importers, distributors. Review reply rates weekly and iterate your pitch every week
  • ▸Keep feeding on industry media & databases: PharmaCube, Pharmacodia, Endpoints, Fierce Pharma, Citeline/Cortellis (subscription — verify current terms)
  • ▸From meeting people to holding relationships: follow-up rhythm, sole agencies, annual visits — relationships compound
Self-check — pass when:

✓ You hold 20 industry contacts you can actually talk to (not just accepted invitations)

✓ You can state your category + region focus in one sentence anyone understands

✓ Your outreach emails get replies — and you know why

2. Six career tracks: pick one and climb

The six tracks fall into two families: the first four are 'selling goods' (excipients → intermediates → APIs → formulations, with rising margins and barriers), the last two are 'doing deals' (licensing → M&A — the closer to capital, the higher the pay). Suggested path: take your first order in excipients/intermediates, build domain and regulatory depth on the job, then decide whether to upgrade to APIs/formulations or move into deals. A useful analogy: distressed-asset trading is 'find undervalued assets → restructure → sell high'; pharma trade is 'find undervalued suppliers → package for compliance → sell to overseas buyers'; licensing and M&A are 'find undervalued assets → package the value → sell to industrial buyers'. The frame is identical — only the vocabulary changes.

TrackIn one lineEntry barrierTime to learnIncome (reference)
Excipients (pharma-grade)Volume business, many SKUs, small MOQs — the best first trackLowest (college/bachelor suffices; deals and resources matter more)2–3 months to start; independent in 6 monthsBase ¥5–10k/month + commission (often 20–35% of gross margin); roughly ¥150–400k a year once mature (public job-market reference — verify yourself)
Intermediates (pharma intermediates)Mid-high margin, needs some process/impurity knowledge — the volume-scaling trackMedium (process routes, impurity profiles, MSDS)3–6 months to start; independent in 6–12Base ¥6–12k/month + commission; roughly ¥200–500k a year once mature (public job-market reference — verify yourself)
APIs (active ingredients)High margin, heavy compliance (DMF/CEP/GMP) — the biggest-goods track in both profit and liabilityHigh (DMF/CEP, GMP and the language of registration)6–12 months of systematic learning before going soloBase ¥8–15k/month + commission (often 1% of sales or a gross-margin share); roughly ¥300–800k a year once mature, higher at the top (public job-market reference — verify yourself)

M&A (pharma acquisitions & restructuring)One deal can make or break: source → value it three ways → diligence → negotiate → close & integrate — the track closest to capitalHigh (finance/legal/strategy background + nerves; read financial statements before you sit down)12 months+ (valuation and diligence are hard skills — start in the simulator)Base + deal bonus, highly variable: ¥300k–2m+/year depending on platform and level (public industry reference — verify yourself)

Excipients (pharma-grade)

Volume business, many SKUs, small MOQs — the best first track

Excipients are the 'supporting cast' of drugs: starch, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, trehalose... Low unit value but stable, repeat customers; you earn your money on service and professionalism — the ideal sandbox to learn the whole chain.

Growth path
Start (0–3 mo) — Know 20 common excipients, pharmacopoeia standards and the six documents; shadow one deal end to end
Independent (3–6 mo) — Run enquiry→quote→contract→delivery→collection solo; build your own 30-supplier list
Mastery (6–12 mo) — Own 1–2 categories + one region; win a sole agency; mentor newcomers
Skills
  • · Product knowledge (CP/USP/EP pharmacopoeias) and applications
  • · Trade chain & documents (B/L, certificate of origin, packing list, invoice)
  • · Outreach & enquiry screening (real buyers vs scam enquiries)
  • · Credit-term risk control & customer credit rating
Time to learn

2–3 months to start; independent in 6 months

Income (reference)

Base ¥5–10k/month + commission (often 20–35% of gross margin); roughly ¥150–400k a year once mature (public job-market reference — verify yourself)

Who it fits

Newcomers, career switchers, legal/language backgrounds (contracts and compliance are a plus)

Intermediates (pharma intermediates)

Mid-high margin, needs some process/impurity knowledge — the volume-scaling track

Intermediates sit between chemicals and pharma: customers want both low price and controlled impurities. Better margins than excipients, 60–90-day terms, and factory scheduling plus process changes are your daily battlefield.

Growth path
Start (0–3 mo) — Read synthetic routes and impurity profiles; interpret CoA/SDS; know 30 high-frequency intermediates
Independent (3–6 mo) — Run deals solo + coordinate factory audits + handle quality disputes
Mastery (6–12 mo) — Lock in 2–3 core factories, do custom/exclusive deals, move into hot areas like peptide/GLP-1 intermediates
Skills
  • · Process & impurity basics (routes, residual solvents, genotoxic impurities)
  • · Factory management: schedule follow-up, change control, audit hosting
  • · Cost breakdown & tiered quoting
  • · Quality-dispute negotiation & claims clauses
Time to learn

3–6 months to start; independent in 6–12

Income (reference)

Base ¥6–12k/month + commission; roughly ¥200–500k a year once mature (public job-market reference — verify yourself)

Who it fits

Chemistry/pharmacy backgrounds preferred; people who like processes and plant visits

APIs (active ingredients)

High margin, heavy compliance (DMF/CEP/GMP) — the biggest-goods track in both profit and liability

APIs are the drug substance itself: big deal values, 90–120-day terms, and filing documents are the moat. Whether a DMF/CEP is genuine and what it covers decides whether a multi-million deal can happen — here, compliance skill is bargaining power.

Growth path
Start (0–6 mo) — Master the DMF/CEP/GMP system; know 50 API items and where they are made
Independent (6–12 mo) — Handle filing-document coordination and audit support solo; close 3 API deals
Mastery (12 mo+) — Become the item expert in one therapeutic area (e.g. GLP-1/peptides, ADC) and fight alongside RA and marketing
Skills
  • · The language of filings (structure and review focus of DMF/CEP/ASMF)
  • · GMP & quality systems (change control, deviations, OOS)
  • · Long-term cash management & credit insurance
  • · Technical negotiation (impurities, polymorphs, patent & FTO flags)
Time to learn

6–12 months of systematic learning before going solo

Income (reference)

Base ¥8–15k/month + commission (often 1% of sales or a gross-margin share); roughly ¥300–800k a year once mature, higher at the top (public job-market reference — verify yourself)

Who it fits

Pharmacy/chemistry backgrounds; steady people who can carry long payment terms and heavy compliance

Formulations (finished-dose export / international RA)

Highest barrier, highest reward: registrations, shelf life, cold chain — nothing may go wrong

Formulation export is 'selling drugs with registrations in hand': LatAm and MEA markets are hungry, local capacity is thin, and that is the fastest-growing doorway for Chinese finished doses. People who speak Spanish and understand registrations are the scarcest asset in the lane — the ANMAT/INVIMA/COFEPRIS routes are your moat.

Growth path
Start (0–6 mo) — Understand registrations vs market access; read a CTD summary
Independent (6–12 mo) — Coordinate RA + supply chain + cold chain end to end; own one country/region
Mastery (12 mo+) — Run one formulation's export: pricing, filing rhythm, channels and local partners
Skills
  • · RA & market access (CTD, country differences)
  • · Supply chain & cold chain (shelf life, temperature control, traceability)
  • · Pricing & tender/reimbursement environments
  • · Local partner management & cross-cultural negotiation
Time to learn

12 months+ (build your foundation in excipients/APIs first)

Income (reference)

Roughly ¥300k–1m a year (international BD/RA tracks; higher at director level — public headhunter reference, verify yourself)

Who it fits

Pharmacy + regulatory hybrids; people who want to turn products into businesses, not just move goods

Licensing (License-in / License-out BD)

You sell rights, not goods: upfront + milestones + royalties — where legal and deal skills are priced highest

2025 was a landmark year for China biotech out-licensing (public reports: 150+ deals, well over $100bn total), and assets are sold ever earlier, so the market needs people who can assess risk in R&D language and be trusted by R&D teams. A legal background is not a weakness: your rivals are scientists who cannot structure deals — learn the science language and you compete asymmetrically. Core work: asset scanning → due diligence → term sheet → post-deal management.

Growth path
Foundation (mo 1–2) — Science-language sprint: target→IND→NDA, three hot areas (oncology/autoimmune/metabolic), patents & FTO basics, a 50-entry tri-lingual glossary
Skeleton (mo 3–4) — Deal structure & valuation: upfront/milestones/royalties, MTA/LOI/term-sheet clauses, rNPV/DCF hands-on; output a mock term sheet
Practice (mo 5–8) — Ride one real project: legal-clause review, overseas buyer screening, VDR coordination, one deal teardown a week
Portfolio (mo 9–12) — Pick a niche (GLP-1/peptides or ADC), write a market analysis, work the conference circuit, ship tri-lingual CV + personal site
Skills
  • · Science language (follow target/clinical/patent talk and translate it into deal language)
  • · Deal documents & clauses (term sheets, licence agreements, risk points)
  • · Valuation modelling (rNPV/DCF, hands-on Excel)
  • · Due-diligence coordination & virtual data room (VDR) management
  • · Cross-cultural negotiation (China–Europe–LatAm time zones and styles)
Time to learn

A 12-month switch plan (2 mo foundation → 2 mo deals → 4 mo practice → 4 mo portfolio)

Income (reference)

Entry ¥15–25k×15 (Shanghai associate) → mature ¥600k–1.5m/year → director ¥1–2m+ (2025-26 public headhunter reference — verify yourself)

Who it fits

Law, business or R&D backgrounds all work; people who understand molecules, clinics and patents earn the premium; native Spanish + LatAm connections is a scarce hand

M&A (pharma acquisitions & restructuring)

One deal can make or break: source → value it three ways → diligence → negotiate → close & integrate — the track closest to capital

Pharma M&A scales the game from 'one deal' to 'one factory': intake → pitch book → diligence → four-dimension financial health-check (growth/profitability/efficiency/safety) → three valuation approaches (asset/market/income) → price & negotiate → close & integrate. The industry sits in a restructuring window as innovative drugs start earning; people who can reckon, dare to price, and integrate are scarce long-term.

Growth path
Read (0–3 mo) — Read the three statements alone, run the four-dimension health-check, compute net assets
Value (3–6 mo) — Know when each of the three valuation methods works or breaks, DuPont decomposition, comparable selection
Deals (6–12 mo) — Ride one real acquisition through diligence and negotiation; understand deal structure & consideration design
Integrate (12 mo+) — Post-close integration: the 100-day plan for people, money, assets and compliance
Skills
  • · Financial statement analysis & four-dimension health-check
  • · Three valuation approaches + comparable-company analysis
  • · Diligence organisation (finance, legal, commercial, compliance)
  • · Deal structure & negotiation (consideration, earn-outs, liability caps)
  • · Integration management (the 100-day plan)
Time to learn

12 months+ (valuation and diligence are hard skills — start in the simulator)

Income (reference)

Base + deal bonus, highly variable: ¥300k–2m+/year depending on platform and level (public industry reference — verify yourself)

Who it fits

Finance/legal/strategy backgrounds; distressed-assets, banking or consulting experience maps over naturally (same frame)

3. AI toolkit map: pick by what you want done

The core rule for choosing AI tools: pick by what you want done, not by brand collecting. Master one first (ChatGPT recommended), then compare — paying for ten at once is pure waste. The three tiers below are ready to copy.

Tier 1 · the three must-haves (free tiers are strong enough)

ChatGPTGeneral Q&A, writing, code, images, voice; top-tier ES & EN, EU-compliant, recognised on any CV
ClaudeLong documents, code, complex analysis; the most human prose, the cleanest logic
GeminiGoogle-suite integration, long video, research; generous free tier

Tier 2 · pick by direction

Canva / Adobe FireflyPosters, social graphics, decks (drag-and-drop for non-designers / the pro route)
Gamma / Notion AIClient-ready decks in seconds; knowledge management and deliverables
GitHub Copilot / Replit / Bolt / v0Coding, and building sites/tools from plain language — launch and charge with zero code
Zapier / Make / n8nAutomation workflows that save small businesses headcount (huge demand among Spanish SMEs)
DeepL / SmartcatTranslation & localisation projects (best ES↔EN↔ZH quality)

Tier 3 · the China–West bridge (your differentiated lane)

微信 / 视频号生态China–Spain cross-border commerce, bringing Spanish brands into China — very few Spaniards know the WeChat ecosystem, and demand is strong
WorkBuddyOrchestrating virtual teams: experts + skills + connectors — great for building and automating operations
The rhythm (matters more than the tool list)

The rhythm matters more than the tool list. Month 1: master one AI and drill three skills — asking well, verifying answers, knowing when not to trust it. Months 2–3: go deep in one direction (content / development / consulting / automation). Months 4–6: earn with it — ship three real pieces (not demos) to GitHub/Behance/your own site; that is your CV. Remember: do not learn 'tools', learn 'what problems you can solve with them'. Tools change every quarter; 'I can make AI do X for me' never loses value.

4. The generic 12-month roadmap (shared by all six tracks)

Months 1–2

Entry: language + products + compliance sprint

  • ▸1.5 h a day: jargon table + the four product lines + pharmacopoeia basics
  • ▸The six compliance documents + Incoterms + payment-method risk comparison
  • ▸Get going on the AI trio (run six small tasks with the four-step delegation formula)

Deliverable: a four-product-line handbook + a 50-entry tri-lingual glossary

Months 3–4

Getting started: full chain + prospecting + AI workflows

  • ▸Shadow one full deal (enquiry→quote→contract→delivery→cash), one case teardown a week
  • ▸Build your product site (catalogue + enquiry form); start LinkedIn outreach
  • ▸Send 50 outreach emails a week and log reply rates (ES/EN/ZH templates)

Deliverable: live personal site + 200 outreach emails + reply-rate stats (licensing track: mock term sheet + rNPV model instead)

Months 5–8

Independent: real deals / real project diligence

  • ▸Close 3 real deals solo (start with a small excipient order) or ride one real project end to end
  • ▸Own the core contract clauses (quality disputes, arbitration, liability caps) — the legal background's killer move
  • ▸Two industry contacts a week + one deal/case teardown a week (300-word take)

Deliverable: 3 deals + a tri-lingual standard contract template (licensing track: a full due-diligence report)

Months 9–12

Deepening: category expert + regional market + monetised network

  • ▸Pick your category (peptide/GLP-1 related or ADC suggested) + region (the Spanish-speaking world is your natural edge)
  • ▸Build sole-agency relationships (supplier side + customer side); learn LatAm registration requirements
  • ▸Tri-lingual CV (ZH/EN/ES) + conference attendance (CPHI and peers)

Deliverable: category-expert positioning + a stable customer base + tri-lingual CV and personal site (that is your interview material)

5. How to read the income figures

On income: the bands above combine 2025–26 public job postings and headhunter data (trade tracks run on 'base + commission', uncapped but volatile; deal tracks run on 'base + bonus/royalty share', strongly tied to platform and projects). The numbers set expectations only — verify them yourself; they are not income promises. The common pattern: years 1–2 are an investment period; what really separates people after year 3 is whether they hold a track record of closed deals.

6. Resource library: our courses + external resources

This page is a learning guide, not an employment promise. All income and market figures are public-channel reference bands (2025–26) — verify them yourself; course and tool links follow the live content of our pages. When the studying gets hard, remember: do not learn 'tools', learn 'what problems you can solve with them'.

Where to go next
